Horse Safari at Plett Game Reserve

NOTE: Horseback safaris are no longer offered at Plett Game Reserve

Horse safaris are a very popular offering from Plett Game Reserve. South African and international visitors are enthralled by the idea of stepping back in time to an era of horse transport and abundant wildlife in the Garden Route.

Can you imagine this? A beautiful, sunny Plett day and you’re meandering on horseback through the plains of Plett Game Reserve. Up ahead a herd of zebra are grazing with the Tsitsikamma Mountains towering as a backdrop. You stop, take a breath and just appreciate being here in South Africa in this time and place. Everything is suffused with a golden light, you can see a giraffe amongst the treeline in the distance and there is not a sound but those of nature. The ultimate escape.

Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve’s horse safaris are offered to both guests of the Baroness Lodge and day visitors to the reserve. Visitors can enjoy daily rides at 10:00 and 15:00 (rain permitting) around the reserve with experienced horses and educated guides. The horses are comfortable with the wildlife at Plett Game Reserve so guests are ensured of a stress-free ride. The activity is not recommended for those under 12 and, to preserve our wildlife, the predators are kept in separate parts of the reserve, which the horse safari doesn’t visit.

Our horses live on the reserve and the other animals are familiar with their presence, which makes for incredible wildlife encounters. Guides will introduce the animals and answer any questions that you may have, while you walk peacefully through the South African bush.  Although it is necessary to have some riding experience, riders can enjoy sightings of giraffe, rhino, zebra, elephants, buffalo, wildebeest and more on a two-hour horse safari – it’s an unforgettable experience!
